Before he became a member of Pearl Jam, bassist Jeff Ament played in several other notable bands.

His first was Deranged Diction a hardcore Missoula, Mont., band he formed in 1981 with Bruce Fairweather, who later joined Ament in the legendary Seattle group Mother Love Bone (Mother Love Bone disbanded after frontman Andrew Wood died). Ament and Fairweather were skateboarding college students at the University of Montana.

Deranged Diction — which describes its music as “loud, fast and pissed off” — shared stages with Husker Du, Butthole Surfers, the Accused, Mr. Epp and Malfunkshun (Wood’s pre-Mother Love Bone band) at such clubs as Gorilla Gardens, Metropolis and The Vogue.

Deranged Diction performed for the first time in 25 years last Friday at the Crocodile Cafe. The raucous show was a great slice of Northwest rock ‘n’ roll history. Among the songs the band performed were “Aspirin,” “I’m an Amerikan” and the Flipper-inspired “Periscope.”

Trading vocals were Rod Moody and the group’s original singer, Tom Kipp, who nearly outdid each other shredding vocal cords. It was hard to believe they are so many years older than the young punks of DD’s heyday. The crowd even got into it with some body-slamming on the main floor.

Sharing the bill for the historic show were Police Teeth and Suck Machine, featuring Kurt Bloch, Drew Church, Mike Musberger and Andrew McKeag.
