The two bands with my current favorite names are touring together, and they‘re performing Friday, July 5, at Seattle‘s edgy El Corazon.

For one, I offer you: Pity Sex. And if, you know, you’re not into the whole brevity thing: The World Is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die.

“The name comes from a really bad joke about song titles in the post-rock genre,” TWIaBP&IANLAtD singer-guitarist Greg Horbal writes. And the punch line is? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Pity Sex drummer Sean St. Charles is, if somewhat reluctantly, a bit more expansive.

“Ehh, that’s not a question I like to answer really,” St. Charles (no, he wasn‘t a member of Spinal Tap) emails. “I’ll say that it’s a name that makes people feel uncomfortable and I want to confront that.

“I hate to hear pity sex as a phrase. What the hell is that supposed to mean? There’s nothing pitiful about sex. Sex shouldn’t scare people. We write about sex a lot — not gratuitously, sex as love, sex as human, etc.”

Get the details about the show at the El Corazon website.
