“The Genius Hits the Road,” the 1960 album that gave Ray Charles his first No. 1 hit, a soulful version of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia On My Mind,” will be reissued on Concord Records.
The milestone album about U.S. locales, recorded after Ray left Atlantic Records and joined ABC-Paramount, features such road songs as “Alabamy Bound,” “California, Here I Come,” “Deep in the Heart of Texas” and “Blue Hawaii.”
The album also features band longtime accompanists David “Fathead” Newman and Hank Crawford on saxophones, as well as the Raeletts. The album also marked the beginning of Ray’s long association with producer Sid Feller.
Due Sept. 22 on the eve of what would have been Ray’s 79th birthday, the reissue includes six bonus tracks, digital re-mastering and new liner notes by Bill Dahl — as well as the original notes by Rick Ward.
In addition to the original 12 songs are the six bonus songs: “Hit the Road Jack,” “Sentimental Journey,” “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” “Rainy Night in Georgia,” Paul McCartney’s “Long and Winding Road,” John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and Charles’ own “I Was on Georgia Time.”
Frank Sinatra called him “The only genius in our business” and that obviously wasn’t a kind of exaggeration. Here I’ve tried to collect all notable tributes paid to Ray Charles by peers:
