The Imagine Dragons’ “Into the Night” juggernaut rolls on, stopping in Phoenix tonight, Feb. 17, for a show at US Airways Center before moving on to Austin, Texas (Feb. 20), Dallas (Feb. 21) and Tulsa, Okla. (Feb. 22). Then the tour moves through the South before heading up the East Coast.
Last Saturday, Feb. 15, the Las Vegas rock band performed at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, where lead singer Dan Reynolds dedicated a version of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” to the dads in the crowd — and mentioned that his mom (who probably wasn’t familiar with the song) was in the audience. On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Imagine Dragons played to a thoroughly engaged, fist-pumping capacity crowd at KeyArena, along with opening bands The Naked and Famous (from New Zealand) and X Ambassadors (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Read my read review in The Seattle Times.
The KeyArena concert was less than three weeks after the Grammy Awards, where Imagine Dragons won best rock performance for the hit single “Radioactive” (beating out Queens of the Stone Age and other bands for the award).
Imagine Dragons’ success has caused a backlash from edgier bands that find the Las Vegas group too generic – and undeservedly popular. Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age lashed out at Imagine Dragons during a recent concert in Houston. Read the story in Stereogum.
